'24' Fan Columnist: Just Walk Away, Renee
Beth Recaps last night's 24. If you're interested in becoming a BuddyTV Fan Columnist, click here

Ziya, Renee's Russian mob contact, is still bleeding out after she severed his thumb in order to remove his probation bracelet. We know that Renee's actions are really troubling Jack because they manage to elicit a couple of really primo "dammits" before the night is over. He says he's calling Hastings back at CTU to pull the plug, but she points out that he would have done the same, a charge he really can't refute. Renee also states that she's the only chance they have of finding the uranium, so he finally relents. According to Renee there are two things Ziya likes: 13-year-old girls and money. Cute as Renee is, she can't pass for a teenager, so she'll hook him in with the promise of mega-millions in commissions for brokering the weapons deal.

Hassan's brother Farhad receives the OK from his cohorts back in Kamistan to finalize the uranium purchase.  He tells Bazhaev, the seller, that he'll have his money in five hours, which must be the longest funds transfer in TV history. Can't these guys use those banks where money gets shifted with the mere click of a computer key?

Being the thoughtful host, Bazhaev provides Farhad with a couple of hookers to help pass the time. He can't be bothered with entertaining him when he's got a dying son to deal with, plus the even bigger problem of the other son who's insisting on seeking medical help. In an attempt to pacify Josef, the healthy son, he finds a place for Oleg to die with a bit more dignity than lying in a dirty storeroom in the back of a restaurant.

Josef is played by David Anders, whom I could never imagine referring to his father as "Papa" when he played bad-guy Sark on Alias. However, he does have at least some spine because mid-trip he decides to disobey Papa and take Oleg to a doctor. In mere moments he manages to not only locate a doctor who's still working at this hour but to find his family AND station his goons at their home to ensure the MD's cooperation.

President Taylor, having learned nothing from Season 7, is horrified to learn that the attempted assassination of Hassan is just the tip of the iceberg and there's a larger plot involving weapons-grade plutonium on American soil. Add to that her dismay to find that peace-loving Hassan has instituted de facto martial law in his country, rounding up traitors left and right for mass executions because that's the only course of action his people will understand. He makes a compelling argument for why Kamistan is so different from the United States, but that doesn't change the fact that this will completely undermine the peace accord they've worked so hard to forge. Back at CTU data analyst Dana continues to be tormented by her ex Kevin, who's now demanding insider info that he can use to turn a profit. Hmm, how do you suppose that will fit in with the plutonium story?

Renee has Ziya on board with her plan. He takes her to meet Vladimir, a player in the Russian mob and someone with whom Renee shares A Past, as in a fatal attraction on his part that led to physical attacks and attempted rape. Even Ziya finds it strange that Renee has no qualms about meeting up with him again. Vlad is understandably wary at her sudden appearance and grills Renee about her activities in the years since they've seen each other. Although CTU has created a cover story and Jack is feeding her the answers, Vlad feels it's a little too neat and has her and Ziya tossed in the trunk of a car to be whisked away for execution. Jack follows them only to find that Vlad is one step ahead and the car in front of him is a decoy.

Renee and Ziya are unloaded by the side of a river and forced to kneel. Ziya is dispatched almost immediately and Vlad's gun is now point-blank in Renee's face. She's utterly without fear as she tells him to go ahead and shoot because she has nothing to go back to. As a tear rolls down her cheek we know this is the single truthful thing she's told him. Ironically it's the one thing that convinces Vlad she's for real and he accepts her back into his circle. Just in time, too, as Jack and the CTU tac teams had finally located Renee and were just about to swoop in. Next week it appears that Vlad is all too eager to pick up where he and Renee left off.
