John vs. Oscar: 2008 Emmys Wrap-Up Podcast
BuddyTV writers John Kubicek and Oscar Dahl discuss the 2008 Emmys.
Ah...sweet, undeserved victory. The 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards took place on ABC last night, and I destroyed my colleague John Kubicek in our Emmy prediction competition. Perhaps “destroyed” isn't the right word, considering I only beat him by one category, but the victory is there nonetheless. Kubicek purports himself to be something of an awards' show savant, a master predictor, though he didn't really show it last night. This morning, Kubicek and I decided to sit down and discuss the events of the previous night. How did our Emmy predictions go, what were our biggest surprises, what were the hits, what were the misses, are among the topics discussed below.
Below, you can find the full mp3 of our extended 2008 Emmys discussion.
In our nearly half-hour discussion, John and I go over our pre-show predictions (which I ultimately won 5-4, though we both fared rather poorly), plus discuss just about every facet of last night's three hour show.
The Emmys were quite unpredictable last night. TV is in a place of transition, when it comes to the awards show. The Sopranos is gone, and there has been a huge onset of highly-acclaimed but little-watched cable shows. Look at last night's winners: Mad Men, Damages, Breaking Bad, In Treatment. None of these shows have been breakout ratings hits. The Drama side of the board last night was just a huge crapshoot.
The Comedy side, however, went pretty much as predicted. The big story in the comedy world was the Emmy voters pretty much crowning 30 Rock the new golden standard in TV comedy. Tina Fey won an Emmy for Best Actress and for Writing. Alec Baldwin won for Best Actor, and the series won for Best Comedy. It can't get any more definitive than that.
