Tim Burton brought more with him to 2009 San Diego Comic-Con this year than just exclusive scenes from his upcoming, fantastical take on
Alice in Wonderland. He also brought a special surprise guest: actor Johnny Depp, who will play the Mad Hatter in the film.
The crowd erupted in ecstatic surprise to see Depp, who waved and then exited the stage with Burton. But that was enough to create some major on- and offline hysteria.
After the jump, read a description of the exclusive Alice footage, and check out the teaser trailer for the film, which is set for March 2010 release.
Burton said the
Alice film, a 3-D peek through the looking glass, is his most challenging project to date.
"It's the first time we've done a lot of green screen," he said. "It starts to freak you out after a while."
The Alice in Wonderland Exclusive Comic-Con Footage:We open on Depp as the Mad Hatter, opening his eyes, then
walking. The screen reads, "There's a place like no place on
Earth." Hatter says to Alice, "You're terribly late. Naughty." The
song "Kids" by MGMT begins to play as Alice falls down the rabbit hole. "You've
got an important date" flashes on screen. The White Rabbit, Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum walk with Alice. We then see Alice standing
with the White Queen (Anne Hathaway). Alice picks up the bottle
and drinks from it, then shrinks. "That's impossible," Alice says.
"Only if you believe it is," says the Mad Hatter. More clips of the Queen
of Hearts (Helena Bonham Carter) and Cheshire Cat. The clip ends with the Mad Hatter throwing open runners that
open into the 3D title credits. "Go through the looking glass March 5,
2010" reads the screen--the "2010" containing the classic Cheshire Cat eyes and grin.
