- Their temporary refuge is short-lived as Wilma's effects make it to Lauderdale.
Recap:
The gang, once again, has to get the Key West house ready for another major storm, Hurricane Wilma. They prepare the house, pack their stuff, and head north to Fort Lauderdale.
Paula Meronek's ex-boyfriend Keith has been planning a visit to the Key at the exact time the Hurricane should be landing. He and Paula make plans to possibly meet in Fort Lauderdale.
Tyler Duckworth, who seems to be the resident Judge Judy, is not short of opinions regarding Paula and her ex-boyfriend, who has been abusive to her in the past. Tyler feels the two are a "trailer park tragedy."
In the van, Janelle Casanave makes a comment to Paula that the gang feels like she was very different when Svetlana Shusterman was out of town recently, more present with the rest of the group. I'm not sure what the point of all this is, except to make Paula and Svetlana feel bad for their friendship? Head-scratcher.
Once again, the castmates might be in exile, but that's no reason to not go out and party, so they hit the local bars. After a night on the town, they kick back at the hotel. Paula is in the downstairs part of the house, hanging with the others, as Svetlana makes a call to her boyfriend. Someone makes a comment to Paula that she only seems to hang out with them when Svetlana is on the phone. For some odd reason (or not that odd - soon becomes clear that she had maybe indulged too much that evening), Paula takes this as a rejection, and retreats upstairs.
The others eventually drift upstairs to see what's happened. Janelle tries to talk to her, but it seems clear that this is not Paula, it's "Paulie Walnuts," and she's sliding into a depressive state. Tyler makes an entrance and exacerbates the whole situation by calling her crazy. She lashes out at him with pure rage and becomes nearly hysterical.
Janelle tries to calm her, while John Devenanzio talks to Tyler, reminding him that when Paula is drunk, it's best to evacuate and wait out the storm. Tyler continues to take her lashing out personally, and calling her a psychopath, all the while maintaining that he understands where she's coming from because of his own struggles. I'm not saying he's lying about his visits to therapy or struggles with eating disorders, but if he really grasped mental illness, he wouldn't be so vicious and glib, throwing words like "psychopath" around.
John takes his chance with Paula. Although he's had his conflicts with her before, they now have developed a really sweet relationship. He's able to communicate with her successfully, seems to make her feel safe and calms her down. He defuses the situation and they're all able to get to bed.
The next day, Tyler and Paula make up and the whole gang heads to the beach for some last-minute fun before the storm hits.
And hit it does. That night as the castmates sleep, the storm pounds Fort Lauderdale. A member of the hotel staff wakes them to have them evacuate immediately: A wall on their floor has been blown in. They make a slow descent down fourteen floors to huddle in a central location.
Here, near-miraculously, Paula is reunited with her ex, Keith! He drove all the way from Louisiana in a hurricane. They spend some time cuddling, but then have to separate as the castmates have to evacuate once again, heading even further north to Orlando. Paula hopes that Keith can head with them, but as the whole situation is chaotic, none of the castmates can be sure what is going to happen next.
