ABC, the number two network in all the land (and only behind FOX because of the Super Bowl and American Idol), had its upfront presentation early this morning.  The network unveiled its Fall schedule, and it's pretty hard to get excited about it.  Nothing against ABC – the schedule is good, probably the best, top to bottom, of any network – it's just that there weren't many openings this time around.  Last season ABC launched eight new shows in the Fall, the most of any network.  For the most part, ABC hit a homerun with Dirty Sexy Money, Pushing Daisies, Private Practice, Samantha Who?, and Eli Stone in the mid-season.

Networks rarely have so many returning second-year shows.  Because of this, ABC had very little work to do this pilot season.  There are only two new shows on the Fall schedule, with two more targeted for the mid-season.  Continue reading for a detailed description of the schedule and new shows.

In May, ABC released a fall lineup that did not include According to Jim, a family-centered sitcom starring Jim Belushi.  However, ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson was quick to add that the network was still talking to the studio with the aim of working out a better deal.  Sure enough, on June 27, the network announced it was bringing back the comedy series for another season, ordering 18 episodes that will air next year.

“I’m really grateful,” Jim Belushi told TVGuide. “I love the show, I love the cast, and ABC and Touchstone have been really great.”

Actress Courtney Thorne-Smith has two things to look forward to next year. She will not only return for another season of According to Jim, but also give birth to her first child.

In Touch Weekly magazine reported recently that the 39-year-old actress is pregnant with her and Roger Fishman’s first child.  Thorne-Smith married Fishman, a businessman, in a small ceremony held on New Year’s Day at the backyard of her home.  Coincidentally, the actress is due to give birth in January 2008.
