Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) is a salesperson for Dunder Mifflin Paper Company on the televison show "The Office." He is a geek but his inflated ego causes him to brag about his days at Cornell University, where he sang in an acapella group, his good looks and his ability to attract women. Although he appears overconfident, Andy is full of insecurities. His needy character leads him to latch onto Michael (Steve Carell), constantly looking to him for approval.
When Andy joins the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin, he immediately finds himself in competition with Dwight (Rainn Wilson). Like a little boy craving his mother's attention, Andy schemes against Dwight in a ploy to gain Michael's affection. Although a generally likeable character, Andy has a dark side. When provoked, his nonchalant, melodic demeanor quickly changes into an angry rage, revealing his problem with anger management.
Andy slowly becomes closer with Dwight, but this friendship is challenged when Dwight's secret girlfriend Angela (Angela Kinsey) breaks up with him and begins dating Andy. In a somewhat impromptu moment, Andy proposes to Angela. However, the engagement is eventually broken off when Andy finds out that Angela is still sleeping with Dwight. The two fight for her affection, and she decides that she doesn't want either of them. Andy is not single for long. When the new receptionist, Erin (Ellie Kemper), joins the company, Andy shyly vies for her affection. The two have a short-lived relationship, which ends when Erin finds out that Andy was once engaged to Angela.
This doesn't squelch his love of life and Andy continues to entertain his office by singing and performing. Unlucky in love, Andy finds comfort in the company of his coworkers, and starts a band with two of the guys from the office.
