Haley James (Bethany Joy Galeotti) is the fourth and youngest daughter of Lydia and Jim James (Huey Lewis and Bess Armstrong). As a child Haley was a known geek and a bookworm but turned out to be a gifted musician and singer. She is best friends with her childhood friend, Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray), who becomes her brother-in-law after she marries his brother, Nathan (James Lafferty).
Throughout her time in the small community of Tree Hill, North Carolina, Haley has always been a rock and a support to those around her, especially her best friend Lucas. At the age of 16, Haley fell in love with Nathan and the two decided to elope and get married. The first few years are rocky for the couple. Haley has a talent for music and finds herself being drawn to a fellow musician Chris Feller. She eventually leaves Tree Hill with him to go on tour. Lucas finds out about this and convinces her to come back home to her family. Haley and Nathan decide to renew their wedding vows in front of all their family and friends. While still in high school, Haley gives birth to Nathan's child, James Lucas Scott (Jackson Brundage) under very dramatic circumstances during her graduation ceremony.
When things finally seem to settle down, Nathan gets into a bar fight and is confined to a wheelchair. It is not easy for Haley to handle Nathan in this condition and once again their marriage is put to the test. During this time Haley also gets fired from her teaching job at the high school due to a moral disagreement with the new principal. She then starts working with Peyton Sawyer (Hilarie Burton) as a music producer for her record label. Once Nathan recovers from his physical handicap, they work out their differences and find out they are going to have another child.
Haley is the quintessential good girl. Despite being young, her experiences as a high school teacher show her to be mature beyond her years. Basically a very cautious person, Haley demonstrates immense depth of character when she leaves her job at the high school due to her moral convictions. She also has great musical talent which she finally gets to showcase when she joins Peyton's record label as a producer.
