Saul Holden (Ron Rifkin) is the older brother of Nora Walker (Sally Field) and the former Chief Financial Officer of Ojai Foods Company on the television series "Brothers and Sisters." Although Nora and Saul are very close and Saul often defends his sister from criticism by others, their relationship was briefly strained when he had a short-lived relationship with Nora's deceased husband's mistress.
It is eventually revealed that Saul had a relationship with a man in his past. Though denying he was gay, Saul did not deny the relationship. While complaining about never having a family of his own, an ex-girlfriend of Saul, Holly (Patricia Wettig), tells him that he was never really into her and implies that he is probably not into women in general. After getting arrested for drunk driving, Saul comes out as gay to his openly gay nephew, Kevin (Matthew Rhys). He tells him that he wasted his life by not admitting it sooner.
After berating his nephew for not getting tested for HIV, Saul gets himself tested secretly. After finding out the results, he tells everyone he is negative. However, after a horrific car accident, Saul tells his nephew, who tries to help him, not to touch him; indicating that he was probably HIV positive after all.
Memorable Quotes:
"Kevin, you may have grown up in a world where men walk around in public holding hands, but at the end of the day you are one of the loneliest people I have ever known."
"I don't hate golf. I loathe it. I despise it. I would rather spend all eternity at a dinner party seated next to Britney Spears than waste an afternoon waving clubs around with a bunch of overfed, over-privileged Arnold Palmer wannabes."
