Sarah Walker (Rachel Griffiths) is the CEO of Ojai Foods and the oldest child of Nora Walker (Sally Field) on the television series "Brothers and Sisters." It is a constant battle for her to walk the line between being a business executive and taking care of her family including her daughter, Paige (Kerris Dorsey), and son, Cooper (Maxwell Perry Cotton).
Sarah was very surprised when her father, William (Tom Skerritt), died and placed her in charge of the family business. This caused tension between Sarah and her brother, Tommy (Balthazar Getty), because he thought the job should naturally have gone to him.
Sarah, Tommy and her other brother Kevin (Matthew Rhys), discovered their father had been in a long-time affair with Holly Harper (Patricia Wettig) and had a daughter with her. The rest of the family was initially mad at them for keeping it a secret, but they eventually calmed down and accepted the situation.
Sarah and her husband Joe (John Pyper-Ferguson) have a troubled relationship as he stays at home and takes care of the children while she has a high-powered executive career. This strain led to Joe kissing someone else. He initially tried to hide this from Sarah, even though other people were aware it happened. When Holly finally told her about the kiss, this deepened the divide between Sarah and Joe and they soon begin divorce proceedings.
Sarah's divorce from Joe becomes official and they agree to shared custody. Joe gets a lawyer and tries for full custody but the kids don't want that and run away to their grandmother Nora's house. After this incident, Sarah and Joe decide it would be better to share custody.
Sarah briefly left Ojai Foods Company when she decided that working with Holly was too difficult to continue. She worked at an organic food company, but ended up leaving and returning to Ojai when Holly left the company. Holly left to start a winery with Sarah's brother Tommy, which was a surprise to Sarah as she never saw this coming.
With Ojai foods in financial trouble, Sarah looks at the land holding their father purchased before he died as a way to make money. It turns out that one of the properties has a huge aquifer underneath it which could be worth billions of dollars and finally save the company and keep the family financially secure.
